Simple Care That Prevents Repairs

• Clean the condenser coil once or twice a year. On most models it sits behind a kick plate at the bottom or on the back. A vacuum and a soft brush are enough.
• Leave space around the refrigerator. Packing it tight into a cabinet without the clearance the manual asks for makes it run hotter and longer.
• Change the water filter as the manual recommends. A clogged filter slows the dispenser and the ice maker.
• Check the door gaskets. Close the door on a sheet of paper. If it slides out with no resistance, the seal is not doing its job.
• Do not overload the shelves in front of the vents. Cold air needs room to move.
• Keep the fridge level so the doors swing shut on their own.

Is It Worth Repairing My Refrigerator?

In most cases, yes. Fans, defrost parts, start devices, valves, gaskets and control boards are all replaceable, and replacing one part is a much smaller job than buying, delivering and installing a new refrigerator. A refrigerator is usually built to run for many years, so a single failed part rarely means the whole unit is done.

Repair becomes harder to justify when the sealed system itself has failed on an older unit — a compressor that no longer runs or a refrigerant leak in the cabinet walls. If that is what we find, we tell you straight, so you can decide with the facts in front of you.

What to Do Before the Technician Arrives

• Keep the doors closed. A closed refrigerator keeps food cold for about 4 hours, and a full freezer holds its temperature for about 48 hours (USDA guidance).
• Check the obvious. Make sure the fridge is plugged in, the outlet works, and the temperature control has not been bumped.
• Move food you cannot lose into a cooler with ice.
• Clear a path to the refrigerator so the technician can pull it out if needed.
• Throw out perishables that have been above 40°F for more than 2 hours. The USDA treats 40°F as the safe limit for refrigerated food.

Refrigerator Smells and What They Mean

A bad smell is not always a repair, but sometimes it points to one.

• Sour or rotten smell that returns after cleaning. Check the drain pan under the refrigerator; standing water and spilled food collect there. A clogged defrost drain can also hold stale water inside the cabinet.
• Musty smell from the ice. Old ice absorbs odors. Empty the bin, replace the water filter and make fresh ice.
• Burning or electrical smell. Unplug the refrigerator and call. A failing fan motor, a scorched wire or an overheating start relay can all give off that smell.
• Chemical smell near the back. Rare, but it can come from a failing part near the compressor. Unplug the unit and call for a check.
