Stove and Cooktop Problems We Repair
Gas ranges and cooktops
- Burner clicks but will not light. The igniter, the burner cap or the burner head may be out of place, wet or clogged with food. If cleaning does not help, the igniter or the spark module needs attention.
- Igniter keeps clicking after the burner lights. A wet or dirty switch behind the knob, or a spark module that sends sparks to every burner at once and will not stop.
- Weak, yellow or uneven flame. Clogged burner ports, a misaligned cap or a problem with the gas supply or the setup for your gas type.
- No burners light at all. Check the gas valve behind the range first. If gas is on, the spark module or the power to it may have failed.
Electric ranges and cooktops
- One coil element does not heat. The element, its receptacle or the infinite switch behind the knob.
- A glass-top zone stays cold or runs only on high. The radiant element, a limiter or the control switch for that zone.
- The whole cooktop is dead. A tripped breaker, a failed terminal block or a control board problem.
- Cracked glass top. The glass can be replaced on many models. Stop using a cracked cooktop until it is repaired.
Induction cooktops
- A zone does not recognize the pan, or shows an error. Induction needs magnetic cookware. If the pan is right, the power board or the coil for that zone may have failed.
- Fan runs and the cooktop shuts off. Overheating protection, often from a blocked vent or a failing cooling fan.
Controls and knobs
- Knobs spin without doing anything, touch controls do not respond, or the display shows an error code. Write the code down before you call.
Gas Smell? Leave First
If you smell gas, do not light anything or flip switches. Leave the house and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. We repair the range after the gas company confirms it is safe.
How the Repair Works
1. We find the cause. The technician checks power and gas supply, tests igniters, spark modules, elements and switches, and reads any error codes.
2. We explain it. You hear what failed and what the repair involves before work starts, and you decide whether to go ahead.
3. We fix and test. Failed parts are replaced with genuine or OEM-approved parts. We test every burner or zone and the controls before we leave. The work is covered by a warranty of up to 6 months on parts and labor.

Gas, Electric or Induction: What Usually Fails
Gas cooktops have few moving parts. Most problems come from the spark system — igniters, the switches behind the knobs and the spark module — or from burners that are dirty, wet or out of place. The gas valves themselves fail less often.
Electric coil cooktops wear out elements, receptacles and infinite switches. These parts are simple, and repairs are usually quick.
Radiant glass-top cooktops hide the elements under the glass. Elements, limiters, switches and the hot-surface indicator light are the common repairs, along with cracked glass.
Induction cooktops heat the pan with a magnetic field. They use power boards, coils, cooling fans and touch controls. Failures are less frequent but need careful testing, because the electronics are sensitive to heat and moisture.
Not sure which type you have? A gas cooktop has grates and visible burners; a coil cooktop has raised spiral elements; a radiant or induction cooktop has a flat glass surface. A magnet that sticks to your pans and a cooktop that stays cool around the pan usually mean induction. Mention the type when you book, along with the model number, so the technician arrives prepared.
Simple Checks Before You Call
- Dry the burner. After a boil-over, a wet igniter will not spark properly. Remove the cap and let it dry for a few hours.
- Seat the burner cap. A cap that sits slightly off-center causes uneven flames or no flame.
- Clean the burner ports with a soft brush or a straightened paper clip. Do not use toothpicks; they break off inside.
- Check the breaker for an electric range. A half-tripped double breaker can leave the clock on while elements stay cold.
- Use the right cookware on induction. A magnet should stick firmly to the bottom of the pan.
Caring for Your Cooktop by Type
Gas burners. Lift the grates and caps after a spill and wipe the burner heads. Wash caps in warm soapy water and dry them fully before you put them back. Make sure each cap sits flat; a tilted cap is the most common reason for an uneven flame.
Coil elements. Let the coils cool, then unplug them from their receptacles to clean the drip pans. A receptacle that is blackened or loose makes the element heat on and off and should be replaced along with the element.
Smooth glass tops. Use a cleaner made for glass cooktops and a plastic scraper for burnt-on spots. Do not slide cast-iron pans across the glass, and never let sugar boil over and cool on the surface — it can pit the glass.
Induction surfaces. Clean like glass tops. Keep the vents under or around the cooktop clear so the cooling fan can do its job, and use flat-bottomed, magnetic cookware.
Knobs and touch controls. Spray cleaner on a cloth, not directly on the controls. Liquid running behind a knob or under a touch panel is a common cause of clicking igniters and unresponsive controls.
Repair or Replace?
Igniters, spark modules, switches, elements and glass tops are all repairable. A single failed part on a range in good shape is worth fixing. If the range is old, several parts have failed, or parts are no longer made for your model, we tell you directly so you can make the call.

When a Range Repair Cannot Wait
Most stove problems are an inconvenience. These ones need you to stop using the appliance and call right away:
- A burner or element stays on after you turn the knob off.
- Sparks, arcing or a bright flash under a coil element or from a receptacle.
- A scorched smell from behind the knobs or the back panel.
- A crack in a glass cooktop, even a small one.
- A gas flame that lifts off the burner, burns very yellow or lights with a loud pop.
- Any smell of gas. Leave the house first and call your gas utility or 911 from outside.
For these, turn the range off at the breaker or close the gas valve if you can do it safely, and keep the area clear until the technician arrives.
